Reforesting Indonesia’s tropical rainforest
MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings is advancing a tropical rainforest reforestation project on the island of Java, Indonesia, as a part of its sustainability activities.
This project pursues the group’s non-life insurance business’s mission of mitigating natural disasters and aims to help address the global environmental issue of diminishing tropical rainforests by restoring and regenerating the Paliyan Wildlife Sanctuary, which had been devastated by illegal logging.
This initiative has been underway since fiscal 2005 in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The project entered its current third phase in 2016.
To achieve the phase III goals of reforestation and building sustainable communities, tree planting efforts are spreading by distributing saplings to the local residents and teaching them how to plant and cultivate forests, with the objective of having the people of the community harvest the bounties of reforestation to benefit their livelihoods.
These efforts over the past 15 years were highly lauded by the Indonesian government, and in September 2020, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry presented Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, a group company of MS&AD Holdings, with an award (business category) for its contributions to conserving the natural environment at a ceremony held at Indonesia’s National Nature Conservation Day summit.
MS&AD Holdings will keep surging forward with this project with its sights set on making even more extensive contributions to global society.
